In accordance with the Academies Act 2010, One In A Million Free School (OIAMFS) is a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee, incorporated on 27th March 2012. It has a two-tier structure consisting of (Academy Trust) Members and Directors (Governors’).

OIAMFS Academy Trust is the sponsors of the school. They retain ownership of the vision of the school and ensures it is upheld. The local Governing Body is delegated with a clearly defined role and responsibility to govern the overall performance of the school.

The Governing Body upholds a strong focus on 3 core, strategic functions:-

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  2. Holding the Principal to account for the educational performance of the school and its students, and the performance management of staff; and
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Effective governance is based on six key features:

  • Strategic leadership that sets and champions vision, ethos and strategy.
  • Accountability that drives up educational standards and financial performance.
  • People with the right skills, experience, qualities and capacity.
  • Structures that reinforce clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
  • Compliance with statutory and contractual requirements.
  • Evaluation to monitor and improve the quality and impact of governance.

Governors Biographies:

Mark Hughes Mark is a Member of One In A Million Academy Trust and has been the Chair of Governors since the school opened in 2013. One In A Million Charity employs him in the capacity of an Executive and is a member of the SLT since 2013. However, he has been actively involved in the Charity since 2005. First starting as a volunteer, then a Trustee for 8 years including 3 years as Chair. Mark has over 20 years experience working within branding, graphic design and marketing. He was employed by Freemans Grattan Holding (FGH) for 14 years. At the time, FGH were the largest mail order company in the UK. He has vast experience in art direction. This includes 12 years within ladies fashion and lifestyle homeware which included art directing international photographic shoots on location across South America, Central America, North Africa, South Africa and all across Europe. Not surprising, Mark has a first class BA Hons in Art & Design. Mark has over 16 years experience in management and leadership positions across the private sector and third sector. On behalf of the school, governance has always been regarded as a strength of the school during its two Ofsted inspections. Mark is Chair of Governors. He sits on the Staff Pay Award Panel, Finance Committee, Principal’s Performance Management Panel, Appeals Panel, Recruitment Interview Panel and Policy Approval Panel.

Rachel Jacobs Rachel is the Co-founder/Director of Leading Children Ltd, which offers consultancy services and training to teachers and Headteachers. During her time in education, Rachel’s expertise has seen her support 12 Local Education Authorities. She is a specialist in Early Years and KS1, however, she also has experience of working with teachers in all Key Stages through to KS4. Rachel has fulfilled many roles in her profession from mother, teacher, lecturer, deputy head, and Independent Education Consultant since 2008, and Associate Consultant to Early Excellence. Rachel is also a Director of Leading Children Imagine Ltd, the home of Leading Children, where the training base, resources and exhibition centre combine. Rachel’s latest Literacy Programme, Leading Children into Literacy is being developed in 5 comprehensive schools, a PRU and 15 primary schools in Bradford. Comprehension tests indicate 51-71% of children making rapid progress in reading across the 49 classrooms they represent. Rachel is an author of the book ‘Time of our Lives?’. Rachel is Vice Chair. She sits on the Education Scrutiny Committee, Appeals Panel and Principal’s Performance Management Panel.

Chris Schofield Chris is the Chairman of Schofield Sweeney. He advises on corporate matters and regularly advises boards, educational and health institutions on governance issues. He is a Non-Executive Director of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (Audit chair). He is also a Non-Executive Director of a number of client companies, a Director of Active Bradford and Bradford Live, a trustee of St Gemma’s Hospice. He is also a visiting lecturer (Law) at Huddersfield University. “Chris is an experienced corporate practitioner who handles sophisticated matters on behalf of some of the firm’s most prominent clients. Clients say he is – an excellent lawyer and business adviser, bringing a huge wealth of experience and commercial understanding to his advice”. Chambers (global legal directory). Chris also serves as the Under-Sheriff of West Yorkshire. He is the legal advisor to One In A Million and kindly provides pro-bono support to the Charity, its CEO and Trustees. Chris says, “One In A Million is important to me because it allows me the opportunity to make a contribution back into Bradford”. Chris fulfils the duties of Responsible Officer, Finance Committee, Principal’s Performance Management Panel and Appeals Panel.

David Baldwin David Baldwin is CEO of Premier League football club, Burnley FC. He has held this post for 4 year. Prior to that David held the same post at his home town club of Bradford City for seven and a half years. He is a proud Bradfordian and still lives in the district and is a keen advocate for city. He chairs the Bradford Economic Partnership a public sector and private sector steering board with the lead on delivering the Economic Strategy for Bradford. David has a real passion for creating opportunity for the young people of Bradford and a key cornerstone to the Economic Strategy is the education and employment opportunities for the young people of this city, given Bradford has the youngest population in the country with over 25% of all residents being under the age of 18. David has sat on a number of boards during his footballing tenure in various forums of regeneration, education, sporting excellence and economic growth as well as being a non-executive director of the enterprise arm of the One In A Million Charity. He was most recently awarded the CEO of the Year for the Premier League 2017/18 season. David says, “OIAM holds a special place in my heart as it is making a real difference to the young people of Bradford who most need the support and inspiration to help them realise their full potential. It is truly an organisation of actions and not simply words”. David sits on the Staff Pay Award Panel and is an advisor to the Finance Committee.

Nick Aldridge Nick is a Relationship Director at Barclays Bradford with a portfolio of 70 customers with a turnover up to £6.5million and a maximum debt threshold of £10million. Nick has been employed at Barclays for the past 23 years and is a skilled lender through the Advanced Credit Skills qualifications. His role is to put the client at the heart of his business by providing good client outcomes, exceptional service and deepening his understanding of them and their needs. Proactively helping his clients to respond to challenges and opportunities facing their business and supporting his local market internally and externally Nick demonstrate a high performance ethic through good client outcomes, his results and his behaviours – being an agent for change and challenging the status quo. He is a passionate Bradford City fan following them home and away for many years and is loyal to Bradford and the surrounding district having lived here all his life. Nick has been a governor since the school was formed and has a strong belief in what the school and charity have been seeking to achieve. He has encouraged others at the bank to become involved and helping to raise monies for the One In A Million Charity for many years. Nick is the Chair of the Finance Committee.

Richard White B.Sc Cert. Ed Richard was a lecturer and manager at Bradford College for many years before joining Bradford City Council as an Education Adviser. He had a similar role with Leicester City Council until retirement. He worked as an Ofsted School Inspector for 23 years and has served on the governing body of 3 different schools across all phases of education. Richard is on the board of trustees for One In A Million Charity. He is also a trustee for a housing charity called ‘The Bridge (East Midlands)’. Richard has held leadership, eldership and trusteeship in religious institutions for more than 40 years. “Being a governor at OIAM Free School is a great opportunity to support a vision of creating a better future for young people and their families across the city – it’s an excellent school”. Richard is the Chair of the Education Scrutiny Committee, Safeguarding Governor, Policy Approval working group. He is also a Member of the Academy Trust.

Rob Moon Rob Moon is the Managing Director of Bermar Building Company.  Bermar Building is a local, Bradford based Construction Company specialising in Education, Health and Public Building construction projects. It has been operating in the West Yorkshire Region for over 45 years. Rob has managed the company for the past 10 years, having taken over as Managing Director from his Farther in 2008.  Bermar Building have worked in approaching 200 schools in the local region. He was born and educated in Bradford before going on to study Construction Engineering Management at Loughborough University where he achieved a First Class Honour degree. He is an active member of the Chartered Institute of Building and the Chartered Institute of Environmentalists. Rob brings over 25 years of construction experience to his role as the Governor with the responsibility for Facilities and Health and Safety. His business experience is also invaluable when meeting with the Finance Committee. He says, “I feel passionate about bringing my skills to a local Bradford school. OIAM Free School, its staff and governing body are all likeminded, in their goals of improving the lives and opportunities of the young people of city”. Rob and his wife, have fundraised for the One In A Million Charity for over 10 years. Rob sits on the Finance Committee and is the named governor for Health, Safety and Facilities. He also sits on Recruitment Panels.

Roxy Daniells Roxy joined One In A Million Free School as it opened in September 2013, bringing vast previous experience in business management, fundraising, catering and project management to my role as Business Manager. As a part of the Senior Leadership Team she leads the non-teaching departments of the school; Finance, HR, Premises, Catering, ICT and Administration. Roxy also represents her colleagues by sitting on the Governing Body as the Staff Governor. Following a career in business and having devoted all her spare time to volunteering for local arts organisations, when an opportunity arose to work in the arts, relocation from Essex to Yorkshire seemed an opportunity too good to pass by. Roxy says, “I joined Opera North in 2002 to run their events, leaving in 2008 as the successful capital programme Transformation, a £30m project to restore the Leeds Grand Theatre, to create a new home for Opera North and to restore the Assembly Room, completed.  The re-opening of the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield following a capital refurbishment, offered me the opportunity to develop the commercial and fundraising offer at Sheffield Theatres, the largest theatre complex outside of London, that comprises the Crucible, home to World Snooker, and the Lyceum Studio theatres. I am blessed to work alongside the well respected professionals that comprise the Governing Body. I am proud to be a part of the One In A Million family and being able to contribute to their success is a real privilege”. Roxy sits on the Finance Committee, Recruitment Panel, Health and Safety Working Group and Policy Approval Panel.
