One In A Million Free School is committed to ensuring that all students are offered a broad and balanced curriculum, which aims to prepare them for life in modern Britain. We encourage our students to be inquisitive learners who are open to new experiences and are tolerant of others.

Our school embraces the belief that at the heart of a modern ever changing, multi-cultural and multi-faith community is the acceptance of key British Values, which it is its responsibility to promote. In doing so, our learners will be able to grow as individuals and citizens in the community and country in which they live.

Topics such as radicalisation are explored as part of the school curriculum within the wider context of the school’s values, which seek to promote compassion, honesty, integrity and excellence. These values support the development of the whole child as a reflective learner within a calm, caring and purposeful atmosphere. Teaching the schools core values alongside the British Values supports quality teaching and learning, whilst making a positive contribution to the development of a fair, just and civil society.

At OIAMFS the promotion of students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is considered to be ‘a whole school issue’. As our school name suggests we value every student and adult as being unique and our values, expressed throughout every aspect of our practice, serve to inform and guide all that we do. 

Promoting British Values

These guiding principles and values drive the direction of the school’s improvement but are also fundamental in supporting the development of British Values.

The government set out its definition of “British Values” in its “Prevent Strategy”, which includes:

• Democracy
• The rule of law
• Individual liberty
• Mutual respect
• Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Examples of the understanding and knowledge students are expected to learn include:

• An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process;
• An understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law;
• An acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour;
• An understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination

One In A Million Free School, working with partners, families and communities, seeks to play a key role in ensuring that the children and young people who attend the school are safe from the threat of terrorism.
