Mental Health Support

One In A Million Free School are delighted to have been allocated an Education Mental Health Practitioner for two days each week as part of the NHS Trailblazer programme.

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST)

The Mental Health Support Teams are a new resource funded and accountable through the NHS. We will work with, and in schools and colleges to support you with mental health and wellbeing issues and to treat mild to moderate mental health isues.

The Mental Health Support Team consists of Educational Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs), Educational Psychologists, Cognitive Behavioural Therapists, Senior Practitioners, Clinical Leads and Supervisors. Additionally, we will be working in partnership with Healthy Minds and Youth in Mind.

The Trailblazer programme has three key objectives

Delivering evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health issues through:

  • Individual face to face work
  • Group work
  • Group parenting classes

Mental Health Support Lead:

The Mental Health Support Lead will be in school to develop a whole school approach offering advice to school staff, students, and liaising with external specialist services.

  • The new mental health work force has been established as part of the national trailblazer to improve and increase availability to children’s mental health services and mental health and wellbeing support.
  • Trailblazer sites will test how MHSTs can work with schools, local authority and other services and reduce waiting times for specialist NHS mental health services.
  • Faster access to NHS care – to bridge the gap between health and education.

The Mental Health Support Lead/s are trained to deliver Low Intensity Cognitive Behaviour Treatments (CBT) to any student demonstrating mild to moderate mental health concerns.

What is a mild to moderate Mental Health Problem?

A moderate mental health problem is when a person has more symptoms that can make their daily life much more difficult than usual. Examples of this can be, but not limited to:

  • Low mood
  • Exam stress
  • Mild anxiety
  • Low self esteem
  • Friendship issues
  • Daily worries and upset

What approach does Mental Health Support Lead use?

  • Guided self help approach using a Low Intensity Cognitive Behaviour framework as part of the NHS Trailblazer programme.
  • Help your own understanding and your self-management of these difficulties. We will look at how your difficulties operate in the ‘here and now’ and what may be keeping them going. We will be introducing tools and techniques for you to apply to yourself and that you can continue to use to stay well in the future.
