Another Chapter of World of Work: Our Trip to Emerald Publishing!

Eight young people from Windhill, Bradford, explore the working world of publishing at Emerald Group Publishing.

Our World of Work (WOW) programme continues with another superb trip to Emerald Group Publishing HQ in Leeds. We spent the day exploring each stage of the publication process and enjoyed practical tasks with each department.

The day centred around the young people thinking of a book concept that would interest them, planning the content, designing the cover/marketing, then pitching their ideas to the sales team.

Step 1: creating a book concept and content ideas. The girls decided to create an informative book to spread awareness of breast cancer. The boys group were interested in creating a spooky football story.

Step 2: Designing the cover and blurb.

Step 3: Consulting and pitching. The youngsters then had to pitch their book concepts to Emerald's sales team!

I learned how to buy and sell.

Step 4: Securing sales! Teamwork makes the dream work!

I learned how to barter for bargains.

Work hard, play hard. We rounded off our fantastic day with a well-earned trip to the bowling and arcades! A fantastic way to finish off a busy day at the office.

We'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the Emerald Group Publishing team for hosting another insightful and engaging World of Work trip. The young people had an amazing day exploring the offices and the world of work. Thank you for your continued support and dedication.

"It was brilliant to see the young people coming out of their shells. They were really engaged and enjoyed the activities. Fantastic to see them diving out of their comfort zones, especially when it comes to speaking in front of new people, and their entrepreneurial skills.

A massive thank you to Emerald for their hospitality, enthusiasm and for putting on a great and educational day for the young people." - Anna (OIAM Community Activator, Windhill)

I feel so proud of myself!

We'd also like to say a big thank you to the Aviva Community Fund for supporting the World of Work programme.
