Sports Arts Enterprise
Our Sports, the Arts and Enterprise themes are woven into the DNA of our ‘Hub and Spoke’ model and ‘theory of change’.
They can be seen in our activities and programmes; this alongside our open access kids and youth clubs.
Our core activities in sports are football, rugby, cricket and athletics. However, this is not exclusive with examples of Fencing, Ju-Jitsu, basketball, boxing, to name but a few!
Our core activities in the Arts are dance, drama, music and media. Like the sports, this is not an exclusive list our schedule includes photography, filming club, iMedia, debate clubs, performance clubs, among many others.
One In A Million as a whole organisation are enterprising – it’s evidenced in everything we do. Whether this be in activities such as Dragon’s Den, Textiles and Printmaking Clubs, Bikeability providing Cycling Proficiency, Beauty Therapy workshops, Food Tech, or through our Positive Lifestyle messaging which develops characteristics such as self-esteem, resilience, creating responsible citizens, and more.
Alongside this, is the opportunity to build a passport of accreditations for the young people such as Sports Leaders Award, Lord Mayor’s Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award, St John’s Ambulance First Aid training, FA qualification, Food Hygiene, and many more.
Case Study: OIAM Streetwise Football
OIAM Streetwise Football is our Friday night twilight project, which is run in partnership with many funders, schools, and the likes of West Yorkshire Police. Since its start on 6th May 2006, Streetwise has won the ‘Barclays Community Sports Award’ by Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League’s Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation. Projects are delivered in each of the 5 constituencies of Bradford with hundreds of young people attending weekly. Each 12 week project is themed with a social topic such as ‘Kick It Out’, ‘Show Racism the Red Card’, ‘Say Nope To Dope’, ‘Mind Games’, ‘All Colours, All Equal’, ‘Eat My Goal - Commit to be Fit’ are just a few of the cleverly named themes we look at amongst all the action.
Case Study: OIAM Indoor Sports-hall Athletics
OIAM Indoor Sportshall Athletics has been running since 2007 led by Toks Adeniji, our head coach, along with all the deeply committed volunteers. In 2010, it became affiliated with UK Athletics. Since then, it has gone onto win England Athletics ‘Development Club of the Year for Yorkshire and Humberside’ and our head coach ‘Development Club Coach of the Year’ for the region. Whilst sessions cater for those who want to simply engage in athletics as a form a recreation, those who show an aptitude progress to our Development Centre. The results are staggering. 29x children have been selected for the West Yorkshire Schools Sports-hall team; 15x have been selected for the West Yorkshire Schools track & field team; others have been selected for the Under 20’s North of England track & field team; 5x have competed at the Under 20’s England Championships for both indoor & outdoor. Further still, over 20 young people have won medals at the Northern track & field championships and Yorkshire championships. Whilst, one boy, Ben, achieved a bronze medal for the Junior Boys High Jump Bronze (recording a jump of 1.78m) at the English Schools track & field finals.
