From Attendee to Trainee: Congratulations Hagie

We'd like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Hagie, who has achieved his Level 3 Youth Award!

Having engaged with the charity in 2017 when he attended Streetwise whilst attending OIAM Free School. We were instantly blown away by his positivity, his character, and consistency over the years and are delighted to have offered him a Traineeship.

It's incredibly special for us to have watched him flourish from attendee to trainee.

As part of his OIAM Traineeship, Hagie has been doing a day a week at Bradford College. We interviewed him about the story so far... Enjoy!

Tell us about your OIAM journey so far…

I moved to England from Spain when I was 14. I knew it was going to be cold, but it was so unexpected when I got off the plane. I was excited to be here and see another part of the world. I joined the Free School where I met Gurmit, one of the charity’s ‘Community Activators’.

Gurm was always there for me. He’s the one who encouraged me to start doing Streetwise with all my friends. I’ve always enjoyed football, it’s a part of life.

From there, Gurmit challenged me to do the Young Sports Leadership Award.”

You won Sports Young Person of the Year in 2018 at OIAM Stars Awards Dinner. What was that like?

"It was really special, I’d never been in that kind of environment before. My family were there and they were so proud of me. It’s a memory for life.”

When did you start to think about working with children and young people?

"I started talking to Danny Forrest (OIAM Community Development Officer) and Wayne Jacobs (Charity CEO)- they were both footballers. They know I love football, but they also know that there’s a life after football. They encouraged me to think about my next steps and eventually offered me the traineeship.”

Well, you’ve now passed your Level 3 Youth Award- Congratulations! How did you find College?

"I really loved it. I’m not a ‘school kid’ but this was an exception. The traineeship really helped me in my course. I could take what I learned at college and put it into practice at the OIAM sessions.”

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned so far, working with our children and young people?

"Being selfless. I need to do whatever I can to make sure that the youngsters are alright, that they have a bright future ahead of them, and know I’m always there for them.”

What’s your favourite part of the job?

"I love working at Kidz Club & Youth Club. I feel like I’m just being myself and I enjoy interacting with the children. We have a lot of fun!”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

"Other than football… I love spending time with friends. One of the things I love about OIAM is that I met my best friend here years ago. We chat every day and I sometimes visit his family too. It’s a best friend for life.”

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with a young person?

"Follow your passion. Do what makes you move forward, and don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do.”

What’s next for you Hagie?

"Eventually I could be a full-time Community Activator and run a community hub. I’ve learned a lot from the team and I’d follow in their footsteps. A big thanks to every single person here for helping me, supporting me, and always being there for me.”

Congratulations, Hagie, on completing your Level 3 Youth Award. You are ONE IN A MILLION!

And a big thank you to all of our supporters, who have contributed to his success. We look forward to reading more about him in the future!
